Intermediate Environmental Consultant (Business Development)

PGL Environmental Consultants (PGL) are seeking an Intermediate Environmental Consultant with a focus on Business Development to be based out of our office in Whitby, Ontario. PGL employees work a 37.5-hour work week and have the flexibility to work from home or office as needed.  

We are looking for someone excited for a client-facing role, focusing on “get work” and “do work” equally.  This role plays a key part of PGL’s business development strategy and execution.

In the “get work” space, you will collaboratively work with your colleagues at PGL to:
  1. Identify, qualify and cultivate prospective clients;
  2. Contribute to maintaining/developing existing client relationships;
  3. Participate in managing PGL’s marketing and sales strategy;
In the “do work” space, you will support projects in an intermediate PM role, in your technical/PM area of expertise. You will be involved in the planning, management, and execution of contaminated site projects at an intermediate level. You will work on project teams that include junior staff and senior review, with technical specialists, when required. Projects will vary and can include any of the following: Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, contaminated site investigations and remediation, monitoring programs, and reporting for due diligence or regulatory instruments. The work will be completed for, and include liaison with, a variety of clients including commercial, financial, developer, and municipal clients.

Responsibilities:
  • Participates in business development - building your network and strengthening relationships within the industry to attract and retain clients.
  • Helps to generate business inside and outside of PGL to support our current staff and progress towards growth.
  • Conducts all levels of contaminated site investigations including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remediation, risk assessments, and fieldwork appropriate to the level of experience.
  • Generally able to manage all aspects of projects with senior technical support and review available.
  • Manages all phases of projects, from developing work plans and cost estimates to managing fieldwork and budgets and producing final reports.
  • Advises and liaises with clients on a broad range of technical issues related to contaminated site investigation.
  • Provides technical direction and mentoring to junior staff.
  • Conducts technical review of junior staff work projects.
  • Contributes to the development of internal protocols and procedures.
Job Requirements:
  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Geology, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Engineering (chemical, geological, geotechnical, environmental), related engineering discipline, or toxicology.
  • 10+ years of environmental consulting experience.
  • Ability to register for a professional designation (i.e., P.Eng., P.Ag., or P.Geo.) is considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to convert sales and generate revenue.
  • Proficiency with work plan and competitive proposal writing.
  • Excellent internal and external client service skills.
  • Excellent client relationship and team management skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of and ability to interpret relevant ON and Canadian environmental regulations, guidelines, and standards.
  • Experience working in a consulting engineering environment at a project-management level.
  • Experience in contaminated site investigation, including field methods for characterization of soil and groundwater conditions and/or contamination (e.g., borehole drilling, monitoring well design/installation, and multimedia sampling methodologies).
  • Experience developing and administering project budgets.
  • Strong technical writing skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Supportive of PGL’s Strategic Initiatives (i.e., high level of engagement).
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong mentoring and coaching abilities and team spirit attitude.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel, generally within the province.
